Mason Greenwood leaves Manchester United in loan deal to Getafe until 2024

In a surprising turn of events on transfer deadline day, Mason Greenwood has parted ways with Manchester United, months after the discontinuation of attempted rape charges against him. The young forward is now set to take the field for Getafe in La Liga, as reported by Fabrizio Romano.

Manchester United issued an official statement regarding the loan, stating, “Mason Greenwood has signed for La Liga side Getafe CF on a season-long loan, subject to international clearance. The move enables Greenwood to begin to rebuild his career away from Manchester United. The club will continue to offer its support to Mason and his family during this period of transition.”

Manchester United had previously made clear that Greenwood’s path back to the game would not be at Old Trafford. They conveyed, “All those involved, including Mason, recognise the difficulties with him recommencing his career at Manchester United. It has therefore been mutually agreed that it would be most appropriate for him to do so away from Old Trafford, and we will now work with Mason to achieve that outcome.”

The forward faced serious legal allegations of attempted rape, assault, and controlling and coercive behavior, which led to his initial arrest in January 2022 and charges in October of the same year. However, in a pivotal development in February 2023, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) revealed that they had a “duty to stop the case” due to “withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light.” Consequently, this led to “no longer a realistic prospect of conviction” and the decision to cease prosecution against Greenwood.

Responding to the conclusion of Manchester United’s internal probe, Greenwood stated, “I fully accept I made mistakes… and I take my share of responsibility.” He has consistently maintained that he did not commit any criminal acts.

With this loan move to Getafe, Greenwood looks to reboot his football career, even as conversations continue around the circumstances that led to his departure from Manchester United.
